TOPIC: Spirituality and Eating Disorders
PRESENTER: Stephen Wright, LPCP
DESCRIPTION: Individuals with eating disorders are often very focused on weight, shape and appearance as a measure of self-value. This focus often has a detrimental impact on their perception of self and, therefore, on their perception of the world around them. This presentation attempts to show the correlation between viewing these issues through the lens of spirituality including self-worth, gratitude, purpose and meaning in life and how doing so can support spiritual development in eating disorder clients potentially leading to better outcomes. This presentation looks at research around these topics and provides active participation in interventions that can be used in treatment. Case studies are used to illustrate these principles and provide context.
